Construction

The construction of the RC Baja consists of  two major sections; these sections are the drivetrain and chassis. The parts for the drivetrain is constructed by using a 3D printer and lathe machine. The 3D printed parts are the motor and bearing housings, and bumper. The parts machined by the lathe are the shafts.

This image depicts the rear shaft axle that has a diameter of a quarter inch with a length of 4 inches. U-joints are screwed at both ends of the shaft. This part was machined using a lathe that took 3 hours to complete. This part is used as the rear axle of the RC Baja.

The bearing housings was manufactured using a 3D printer and used carbon fiber as the material for high strength and light weight. This holds the bearings in place to support the rear shaft. The process took three hours excluding the time required to clean off the support material of the part.

The bumper was 3D printed using PLA material to ensure higher strength and lighter weight. This part acts as a shield to lessen the impact during collision. This process took five hours to print, excluding the time taking off and sanding the support material.

The base plate is made of eighth of an inch thickness aluminum plate that was cut out by shearing the edges using a shear and using the saw to cut out the angled edges. The base plate is finished with a metal scraper for smoothing the edges.

The motor housing was 3D printed with PLA material for high strength and durability. This part holds the components of the motor (gears, motor, and pulley). The printing process took 11 hours that consists of 2632 layers.

Construction Video
